
Gastroenterology is the medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the esophagus, stomach, small bowel (duodenum, jejunum and ileum), large bowel or colon (including rectum), liver, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary tract. Gastroenterology is a sub-specialty of Internal medicine.
A gastroenterologist is a licensed physician who is specially trained to diagnosis and treat digestive diseases. In recent years, advances in diagnostic technology and pharmaceuticals has provided a means for effective treatment of many disorders.
Examples of diseases treated by a gastroenterologist are GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux) / Heartburn, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
